Included construction conversions
Length covers millimetres through miles. Area includes square metres, square feet, square yards, hectares and acres. Volume includes litres, cubic metres, cubic feet, cubic yards and both US and imperial gallons. Mass includes kilograms, metric tonnes, pounds, US short tons and imperial long tons. Density includes kg/m³, t/m³, lb/ft³ and lb/yd³.
Common volume and mass relationships
1 yd³ = 0.764554858 m³
1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg
1 US short ton = 2,000 lb = 907.18474 kg
Why density is a separate category
Density is mass divided by volume, so it cannot be converted using a mass-only factor. For example, pounds per cubic foot convert to kilograms per cubic metre using both the pound and cubic-foot definitions. Converting density does not make an indicative material density more accurate.
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards are in one cubic metre?
One cubic metre is approximately 1.30795 cubic yards.
Is a US ton the same as a metric tonne?
No. A US short ton is 2,000 lb or about 907.185 kg. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg.
Are US and imperial gallons the same?
No. A US gallon is 3.785411784 L; an imperial gallon is 4.54609 L.
